Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to question particular rulings made by the official, following the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
