RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, after an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
