A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
